Chapter 24

Seros

I see Cain lean in to kiss her and who can blame him? That girl is sex incarnate. But it isn’t fair for him to start a round two when the rest of us haven’t even gotten a round one yet. Determined to win her over, I head over to steal her away. Cain glowers at me, but he’ll get over it. If we really do intend to keep her, than he needs to learn to share after all.

Pulling her into the cabin, I lead her on a tour of our second favorite home. With no electricity, convenient appliances serve no purpose here. Even the lights we strung up in the tunnel have a hidden solar panel powering them. Instead of a stove, we cook over a fire pit behind the house. Thus, the kitchen is more of a collection of pots and pans, plates, seasonings, and some boxed or canned food we’ve brought back with us. The lounge area takes up the majority of the first floor, boasting cushions and pelts- it really isn’t practical to haul a couch up a mountainside. We pass Ryker and Skye sprawled out on the floor as Ry attempts to teach the little one some type of card game, using coins as incentive. Lovely, he’s teaching her to gamble already.

A small bathroom completes the downstairs and I lead the way up to the second floor. A hallway with four doors, I take her past the bedrooms and lead her to my favorite room in the house- the weapon’s room.

Floor to ceiling, not a space is spared from displaying weapons of every variety. We spend more time in the human realm than other soldiers, so we have perfected fighting in human form over the years. Some are more practical than others- things like daggers, swords, or bows and arrows- but some are there simply because they look badass and I insisted. Flails, chain whips, maces, grenades, halberds, and even caltrops line the walls or on shelves. I tried to convince Cain to let me buy a flamethrower to add to the collection, but he shot me down. He’s just no fun, the big mope.

Raina looks around in awe. Not all women appreciate weapons and tend to shy away from the violence they represent, but I should have known Raina would continue to surprise me. Reaching out to caress a golden bow, she pulls her hand back just before making contact. I’ve noticed her doing that a few times now- getting caught up in the moment and pulling back at the last second with hesitation.

“Why are you always doing that?”

“Doing what?”

“Wanting to touch something, then stopping yourself.” I clarify.

She pauses for so long I think she may not answer, but then a soft voice full of pain meets my ears. She lets out a weary sigh and refuses to meet my eyes, focusing on anything else.

“You know, you’re actually the first person to ask? I guess no one paid that close of attention before, or maybe they just didn’t care.
